A Hallmark at the Sagamore Bridge

Bourne – The Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the grand opening of their new Visitor Center at 1 Meetinghouse Lane, Sagamore Beach at the base of the Sagamore Bridge. Festivities to celebrate this event begin on Friday, June 26, from noon until 2:00pm.

The classic design and ideal location is sure to make the new building a hallmark in the region serving Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts.

Built by the Massachusetts Highway Department as part of the Sagamore Rotary Project, the center, managed by the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber, will be open seven days per week, year round. Keenan + Kenny Architects, LTD. of Falmouth designed the center, a 2000 sq. ft. building with public restrooms. The building design is a blend of traditional Cape Cod materials including bleached white cedar shingles, brick, slate and white wood trim. Wainscot and a wood, barrel-vaulted ceiling will evoke the interiors of the Cape’s historic public buildings. The center’s interior will contain information displays, a main information counter, and plasma T.V.’s.

Marie Oliva, President & CEO of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce, noted, “The center is visible from the Sagamore Bridge, and abuts the new Plymouth & Brockton commuter parking lot. Expected visitor counts will generate thousands of referrals to businesses. Two new positions have been created to maintain operation year round. It’s a perfect example of how important tourism is to the economy of the region.”

Visitors, residents, and commuters will be serviced by this state-of-the art facility that includes air pressure machines provided at no charge by Sullivan Tire & Auto and express bus ticket machines by Plymouth & Brockton Street Railway Co.

Ms. Oliva emphasized, “Our purpose is to provide a fully functioning center to accommodate everyone’s needs. Whether you want directions, referrals to any kind of business, access to all kinds of events and activities, or commuting to and from Cape Cod, the experience at the center will be worthwhile and helpful.”

The new center replaces the Chamber’s old visitor center formally located at the Sagamore Rotary. One of those buildings was relocated to Hillcrest Landscape Supply on Route 3A and now serves as an office, and the other building was moved to the Aptucxet Trading Post and is used as a ticket booth.

Senate President Therese Murray and Massachusetts Highway Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky will preside at the opening ceremonies along with many other state and local dignitaries. The grand opening is open to the public. Refreshments will be provided by McDonald’s. Special guest “Mayor McCheese” will be there along with plenty of music provided by CAT from Qantum Communications, Cool 102. Grocery store bags will be provided by Cape Cod Five and First Eastern Mortgage Corporation filled with lots of gifts provided by many of the chamber’s business members.

The Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber appreciates the tremendous efforts of the Massachusetts Highway Department, Executive Office of Transportation, and Construction Dynamics, the general contractor, for helping make this project happen.

We especially thank the sponsors of the center which help pay for the year-round operation: Premier Sponsor - The Pepsi Bottling Group, and Major Sponsors - Sullivan Tire & Auto Service, TMG Systems LLC, McDonald’s, Falmouth Hospital dba Cape Cod Healthcare, the family of Michael J. Cicoria, Cape Cod Five, First Eastern Mortgage Corporation and Impressions Home Interiors.

Outside benches were donated by AECOM and Fay, Spofford & Thorndike. Both companies specialize in transportation and helped design the new transportation plan that replaced the Sagamore Rotary.
