IMPORTANT UPDATE ON HEALTH CARE
REFORM LAW |
July 1, 2007, the Massachusetts Health Care
Reform Law went into effect just as businesses here on the
Cape were into our busiest time of the year! Local
Chambers worked hard to explain to the regulators that this
was a problem, and are pleased to tell you they have moved
the deadline for compliance about the required section 125
plan to October 1, 2007. This plan lets employees pay
for their health insurance premiums with pretax dollars.
Forms are still not available through the Connector, but
worksheets are on the Connector website to help you prepare
for the official application forms. The H.I.R.D. (health
Insurance Responsibility Disclosure) forms are now available
online at www.mahealthconnector.org. |

Murray Secures Funding
for Education of Military Students for Fourth Year
Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth)
announced that the fiscal year 2008 budget includes $5.5 million
in funding for the Education Reserve Account which provides the
Town of Bourne with compensation for educating the children
of military families. This is the fourth year that Murray
has secured the grant money.
“The responsibility to educate the children of military
families stationed at MMR falls on the shoulders of the Town of
Bourne. Even though the town accepts this additional financial
burden, the federal government continues to leave its commitment
to compensate the town unfulfilled,” said Senate President
Murray. “Again, the Commonwealth is stepping up where
the federal government has fallen behind and is providing some
financial relief from the cost of educating these children.”
“For the past four years, this additional funding has allowed
the Town of Bourne to better serve the children of our residents
and the children of the military families stationed at MMR,” said
Bourne Superintendent Ed LaFleur. “We are grateful to Senator
Murray for her efforts in supporting education for all of the children
in our community.”
The
grant funding has been available to Bourne since Fiscal Year 2005.
The 2005 fiscal year was the first year that the Town of Bourne
saw any type of additional funding assistance to make up for the
lack of promised federal funding.
