Murray Announces Sandwich Cultural Organizations to
Receive Over $320,000 to Improve Facilities

Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) has announced that two Sandwich cultural organizations, The Thornton W. Burgess Society and Heritage Museums & Gardens will receive $327,000 in grant funding for capital improvements.  The funding is through the new Cultural Facilities Fund administered by MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Senate President Murray, has continuously advocated for our cultural facilities, worked to ensure that this fund was included in the 2006 economic stimulus bill. As a result of her efforts, The Thornton W. Burgess Society will receive $39,000; and, Heritage Museums & Gardens will receive $288,000.

The grants are awarded to non-profit cultural organizations with building projects that will help increase tourism and improve arts and cultural activities. The organization must match the grants dollar for dollar with private funds.

Massachusetts Coastal Railroad, LLC (Mass Coastal), announced that it was awarded the state’s freight rail contract for southeastern Massachusetts rail lines by state Transportation Secretary, Bernard Cohen, at his office at the Executive Office of Transportation and Public Works (EOTPW).

Mass Coastal is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cape Rail, Inc., a railroad management and holding company that also owns Cape Cod Central Railroad, a successful passenger, excursion and dinner train company operating on Cape Cod since 1999.

The rail lines awarded comprise approximately sixty (60) miles of tracks throughout southeastern Massachusetts, including the line from Middleboro to Hyannis, with branch lines to Yarmouth and Falmouth.  Also included are lines in Taunton, North Dartmouth and Westport, MA.  Mass Coastal will commence freight rail service to the line’s customers on January 1, 2008.  The contract with EOTPW is for ten years, with options beyond 2018.

The Hyannis-based railroad is best known for its award-winning sister company, Cape Cod Central Railroad, and for being an organization that is deeply rooted in the communities that it serves.  The companies are owned and operated by:

Buzzard’s Bay Area Habitat for Humanity will host a fun-filled Octoberfest on Friday, October 19th at Marion Music Hall; 6:30 – 9:30 PM.  Tickets are $50. The Friends of Bourne Council on Aging and the Triad/Salt Council, in collaboration with Falmouth Hospital/Cape Cod Healthcare, will sponsor a Health and Safety Fair on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, 10:00AM to 2:00PM, Bourne Community Center, 239 Main Street, Buzzards Bay.  The Fair will feature important information on Emergency Planning, K1 pills, alternative health and healing, nutrition, wellness & safety, elder law, health care facilities & assisted living, at home nursing care, Alzheimer’s Disease, sleep disorders and local transportation, Free health screening will be offered, as well as informational handouts, promotional gifts, raffles and drawings.

Representatives from local Fire and Police Departments, Public Works, Board of Health, Emergency Management, Triad and Bourne Council on Aging will be available to answer questions and provide information.  More information contact 508-759-0653.
